What is Yoga?
Yoga originates in India and is both an
art and a science dating back around 5,000 years.
Yoga means 'union' - the union of
mind, body, breath and spirit. The term 'Hatha Yoga'
refers to
the practice of physical postures (asana), breathing techniques (pranayama),
and relaxation which are several hundred years old. These are the practices most
commonly taught in Western Yoga classes; they may be enjoyed by people of all
ages and abilities. Classes are usually designed specifically for beginners, intermediate or
advanced or may be mixed level with adaptations to suit everyone.
Yoga is not competitive and there is no need to be flexible. You can begin wherever you
and
your body are now and progress at your own pace. Part of the philosophy of Yoga
is
the principle of non-harming (Ahimsa) and this includes not harming your own body; so
in Yoga we may challenge the body but never force or strain it.
The benefits of regular Hatha Yoga practice are: strengthening and toning, weight loss,
increased flexibility and strength, along with reduced stress and anxiety, and increased
inner calm and a
more positive attitude. Conditions such as arthritis and IBS (and many
more) are also aided by regular practice. Research also demonstrates the
positive effects
of Yoga on depression and anxiety - if you're interested just type
'Research Yoga
Depression' into your search engine for many positive results. Immediate effects after a
single session of Yoga practice are a sense of well-being; feeling
calm, relaxed and
energised.
Yoga classes are typically 1 hour or 11/2 hours long and begin with a sequence of
movements to loosen and warm the joints in preparation for asana (posture) practice.
Asana practice consists of standing, seated and lying postures which work on
the entire
body. The class ends
with
a guided relaxation - Bliss!
